Field Manual — algorithm strain
How Algorithm Zombies Work
Full articleWhen feeds decide what you feel before you do.
Full field notes on the ambient bite: the feed learns the shape of your reaction and keeps serving it back.
Cold Open
The phone wakes before the body does. A thumb is already moving. Something in the feed has decided that a feeling should arrive here, now, in this exact shape.
This strain does not kick down the door. It slides into the room through prediction, repetition, and the quiet confidence that your next reaction was already known.
Symptoms of Infection
- The Scroll Reflex — the hand moves before the witness has fully arrived.
- The Prediction Glance — the feed seems to know what you will need next.
- The Mood Borrow — a post, clip, or headline arrives with a feeling attached.
- The Repeat Loop — the same stimulation keeps returning until it feels like truth.
- The Tempo Theft — the body starts moving at the feed's speed.
- The Invisible Hand — the person forgets how much of the day has been selected in advance.
What Is Actually Happening
Algorithm zombies are infected by a machine that learns which signals keep the body engaged, then serves those signals back faster than the witness can track them. Prediction becomes permission. Permission becomes repetition. Repetition becomes habit, and habit starts to feel like identity.
The feed is not evil because it is a feed. The infection begins when the outside system can consistently reach the body before the body reaches itself.
How It Spreads
The bite travels through recommendation loops, notification systems, attention scoring, autoplay, streaks, feeds, and any architecture that keeps a person returning to the next stimulus before they have checked what they are carrying.
It spreads because every return trains the machine again. The more the reaction gets rewarded, the more the system learns the shape of your hunger, your fear, your outrage, your longing, and your boredom. That is not a moral failure. It is a vector.
Where It Appears in Me
Ask where the reaction started. Did you choose the feeling, or did the feeling arrive already optimized for your attention?
The mirror catches when the feed is pacing your body and the body has stopped noticing who is leading.
Witnessing Practice
Put the phone face down. Look at one real object in the room. Name what you were about to do before you did it.
Then wait one breath before touching the next thing. The pause is small on purpose. Small is how the witness gets back online.
Consent Revocation Phrase
"I do not consent to let this feed choose my next feeling for me."
Common Failed Cures
- Algorithm Cure: "Use a better feed to fix the old feed."
- Productivity Cure: "Turn stimulation into output."
- Certainty Cure: "Find the perfect explanation thread."
Algorithm zombification is not cured by more perfect stimulation. It is cured when attention returns to consent.
Human Return
Algorithm zombies are not stupid. They are often attentive, hungry, and tired. They have simply been trained to confuse relevance with reality and repetition with permission.
The return begins when the person can feel the difference between what the feed has selected and what the body actually needs. Choice returns when the next click is no longer automatic.
